Adult Academy

The fall semester of Temple
Israel's Evening Adult Academy
will begin Monday, Oct. 7,
and continue for seven consecu-
tive Monday evenings. Two
courses are offered each evening
including Hebrew language,
Israel, Yiddish music, Jewish
cooking, current issues facing
the Jewish community, Jewish
media and an introduction to
Jewish literature. Participants
may enroll in one or two classes.
A new class of adult bar/bat
mitzvah also will begin this fall
and continue for the next two
years.
Daytime Hebrew language
classes for the beginner and the
advanced beginner as well as
weekly Torah study also are
part of Temple Israel's commit-
ment to life-long learning. En-

Open Houses
On Sukkot

Congregation B'nai Moshe will
offer home hospitality during
Sukkot; seven member families
will open their homes and their
sukkahs for a series of Sukkot
open houses.
The open houses are being held
in neighborhoods throughout the
metro area, as follows: On Sunday
night, Sept. 29, from 8:30 to 10
p.m., there will be an open house
at the home of Michael Weiss and
Tracey Taub in Walled Lake. On
Monday night, Sept. 30, from 7 to
9 p.m., there will be one hosted by
Lynne Avadenka and Marc Suss-
man in Huntington Woods; an-
other hosted by Pearlena and
Jason Bodzin in Southfield; a
third at the home of Susan and
Mel Freidman in West Bloom-
field; and a fourth hosted by Ter-
ri and Rob Roth in Farmington
Hills. On Wednesday night, Oct.
2, the final open house will be held
at the home of Debra and Martin
Davick in Birmingham.

Laurie Novetsky of West Bloom-
field will become the first mem-
ber of Congregation B'nai Moshe
to be called to the Torah as a Bat
N'siah (Daughter of the Journey),
at Shabbat services Saturday,
Sept. 28.
She will celebrate completion
of two years of study in the syn-
agogue's N'siah program, in
which adult learners study He-
brew, the Siddur, Bible, Jewish
practice, and Torah cantillation.
Ms. Novetsky will read from the
Torah, deliver a D'var Torah,
chant the Haftai-al] ar d lead
parts of the service.
A new, first-yea] N'siab class
will be launched in the fali of
