ADVLT EDVCATION — LIFE—LONG LEARNING

WORTH

ten overlooked today. To engage
in idolatry, to worship other gods,
is a desecraton of God's name. We
have Jews who are Buddhists
and even some who are devotees
of what is called the "wiccan" re-
ligion, which is regarded as a
form of nature worship. These
constitute a more serious prob-
lem for the survival of Judaism
than the differences bewteen the
denominations in the Jewish
faith.
While we cannot prevent all of
our fellow Jews from falling for
the various forms of paganism,
we can do two things to lessen the
danger. One is to make clear that
in the religious sense there can
be no such thing as Jewish Bud-
dhist or a Jewish follower of wic-
can. You can be one or the other,
but not both. This refers to mat-
ters of religious beleif and prac-
tice, not halachic status.
Halachically, even a Jew who
worships idols would fall in the
category of a sinful Jew, but still
a Jew.
The other is to inform our peo-
ple that there is room within the
sphere of Torah for meditiation
and mystical experiences. You
can be a mystic and still be a pi-
ous Jew, provided your quest is
rooted in the Torah.
What many of our fellow
Jews are seeking is what many
non-Jews are also seeking.
That is, they wish for a religion
or philosophy of life which
will not make any demands on
them.
As we have just begun a new
year, let us hope that more of our
people will realize that being part
of a tradition which is over 3,000
years old and which has shown
great flexibility in adapting to a
variety of circumstances is well
worth the effort. ❑
