tion at Rehabilitation Institute of
Michigan (RIM), is one of the first
psychologists to be certified by the
American Board of Rehabilitation
Psychology.
The board, established in 1995,
administered its first set of certi-
fied examinations in July. Dr.
Rosenthal was one of 10 individ-
uals who successfully completed
the process and was awarded a
diploma in rehabilitation psy-
chology.
Dr. Rosenthal, also a professor
and associate chairman of the de-
partment of physical medicine
and rehabilitation at Wayne State
University, is also the secretary
of the newly established board.

Dr. Michael L. Fox recently

qualified as a certified medical re-
view officer. Dr. Fox is certified in
family practice and addiction med-
icine with offices in Farmington
and Livonia.
Dr. Fox was certified by the
Medical Review Officer Certifica-
tion Council, an independent or-
ganization that identifies
physicians with the highest pro-
fessional standards of medical ex-
pertise and practical skills
necessary to evaluate drug and
alcohol tests in public and private
sectors of the workplace.

In the early 1960s, shortly after I
finished my cardiology training,
a 14-year-old boy named Brad
was referred to me for recom-
mendations in managing a seri-
ous birth defect. He had been born
a "blue baby" and was diagnosed
as having an uncorrectable heart
defect.
Brad's growth was stunted,
he caught cold easily and was sick-
ly. His color was always bluish,
and his fingernails and toenails
had a peculiar appearance: They
looked like the end of a drumstick.
If he did any more than mild phys-
ical activity, he became exhaust-
ed and had to stop.
He was quite bright in school,
and his parents were hoping he
could go to college. But there was
one problem: He might not live
that long. They wanted another
opinion, and that's how he came
to me.
My evaluation revealed a very
pleasant boy with a slightly en-
