probably aren't read-
ing most of the copy
that usually precedes the rat-
ings portion of the now-famous
Kosher Bites column. And we
know why — you just want to
know what the product tastes
like and where you can get it.
And we actually toyed with
the idea of not even running the
column, what with Monday be-
ing a fast day for many Jews.
But, being dedicated to our
responsibilities as journalists
and taste testers, we decided to
throw ourselves into the job of
trying out the Famous Amos
Chocolate Sandwich Cookies.
For a mere $2.99, our fearless
leader Phil Jacobs purchased
the somewhat elusive treats at
the Farmer Jack grocery store
at Harvard Row on 11 Mile and
Lahser roads.
The cookies, under the su-
pervision of the Union of Or-
thodox Jewish Congregations
of America, have almost no re-
deeming nutritional value save
for 2 percent of the recom-
mended daily allowance of both
calcium and iron per three-cook-
ie serving. The standard serv-
ing also yields 150 calories, 8
grams of fat and a measly 1
gram of dietary fiber.
But what they lack in nutri-
tional value, they more than
":
make up for in taste. The
crunchy cookie, decorated with
a pretty floral pattern and the
Famous Amos logo, offsets a
strong chocolate taste with a
creamy filling. It is very remi-
niscent of its long-lost treife
cousin, the Oreo.
Our staff, sticking in there
for the fourth straight week of
taste tests of kosher chocolate
products, gave it an over-
whelming forks up rating.
"Wow! These are great! I
want to eat a million! And
why not? I am pregnant. I
can do whatever I want!"
— Elizabeth Applebaum
"If I were an Oreo, I'd sue.
Identical to the Nabisco
classic. Forks up."
— Julie Edgar
"'Forks up. Tastes just like
Oreos but with less fat
grams. And I love that no-
tion."
—Julie Yolks
"As a cookie connoisseur,
I would say these are very
good."
— Carla Schwartz
"Excellent flavor. No af-
tertaste as with cheap imi-
tations."
— Sy Manello

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Israel's
credit rating was reapproved in
the international markets with
an A and A3 by credit rating com-
panies Moody's Investors Service
and Standard and Poors.
The announcement came two
days before government issues
on Eurobonds were underwrit-
ten at a ceremony in Jerusalem.
The ratings are crucial in Israel's
attempt to raise funds abroad.
The decisions by Moody's and
Standard and Poors were wel-
comed as "a vote of confidence"
by the Israel Finance Ministry,
which hopes to sell up to $250
million worth of bonds by the
year's end, the first part of a
three-year bid to raise $750 mil-
lion.
