Ehud Olmert:
Relying on facts to become known.

expenses," which they could use
as tax write-offs.
Mr. Olmert, according to Mr.
Ben-Yair, deliberately made no
mention of these contributions
when he filed the Likud's cam-
paign financial records to State
Comptroller Miriam Ben-Porat.
On the basis of these falsified
books, Mrs. Ben-Porat gave the
Likud a clean bill of health, which
allowed the party to receive ap-
proximately $1.25 million in pub-
lic campaign funds.
Mr. Ben-Yair first announced
his intention to indict Mr. Olmert
a few days after this year's May
29 election.
After the election, there were
calls in right-wing and religious
circles for Prime Minister Ne-
tanyahu to fire the attorney gen-
eral because he was too liberal.
Likud IVIEcs charged that Mr. Ben-
Yair intended to use the indict-
ment of Olmert as an "insurance
policy," figuring that Mr. Ne-
tanyahu would be reluctant to fire
the attorney general for fear of ap-
pearing to be tampering with jus-
tice.
On Sunday, Mr. Ben-Yair ex-
plained that the indictment was
coming eight years after the al-
leged crime because much of the
evidence against Mr. Olmert sur-
faced in trials which ended only
in March.
Among those convicted in con-
nection with the fraud were Men-
achem Atzmon, who was Mr.
Olmert's co-treasurer of the Likud;
Mordechai Yahel, the Likud's ac-
countant at the time; the Likud
campaign worker Yona Peled; and
some businessmen who con-
tributed money to the party's cam-
Paign.
After discussing the matter
with Mrs. Arbel, Mr. Ben-Yair an-
nounced: 'There is sufficient evi-
dence against Knesset Member
Olmert, and under such circum-
stances it is proper that he be
brought to trial like his co-trea-
surer and his subordinates, who
were convicted."
Mr. Peled, who has testified in
court that Mr. Olmert directed
him on how to solicit the contri-
butions and get around the law,
is expected to be a crucial witness
against the mayor, if there is a tri-
