lulay.
On Hoshanah Rabbah, the
sixth day of Sukkot, it is tradi-
tional to beat out the last of our
sins with the lulay. Try this:
Take your lulav, either crafted
or genuine, and walk in a circle
and beat away your sins. Guar-
anteed to feel good.
The midrash teaches that the
—dulav and etrog represent vari-
ous body parts — the etrog, the
heart; the palm, the spine; the
myrtle, the eye; and the willow,
the mouth.
You can make a list of how
the various parts of the body
work together to make a Jewish
person, i.e., a Jewish person has
to have a mouth in order to
'-thank God for the many bless-
• ings we have in the world; or a
strong spine (backbone) to speak
out about the evils in the world.
It is a custom to invite one of
seven biblical guests to your
sukkah for a meal. The guests
— called ushpizin — are tradi-
tionally Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,
Joseph, Moses, Aaron and
David.
•
You can recreate the custom
/— of ushpizin. Every night as you
sit down to dinner, invite one of
the traditional biblical guests to
your table. You might even con-
sider inviting their wives and
children as well. Someone may
dress up as the guest and tell
about his life.
To extend this into modern
times, you may want to consid-
• er inviting some other important
Jews to your table as well. Con-
sider being a guest in someone's
sukkah or home during the hol-
iday and go over in costume.

* The holiday of Sukkot connects
us with our agricultural roots. In
the Jewish tradition we leave the
corners of our fields for the poor.
Consider going to one of the shel-
\ ,ters here in Detroit and either
• prepare or serve a meal there as
a family. If this is not convenient,
put together a meal of canned or
dried goods and deposit the items
at a local food bank.

* The holiday of Sukkot is also
a reminder to take care of the
land. This is your opportunity
as a family to engage in a pro-
\-ject which will help the envi-
• ronment. Consider clearing a
patch of land near your home
which needs some attention;
start a recycle project or collect
newspapers from neighbors;
plant a tree or begin to grow
seedlings indoors.
