successful career featuring her Wacky
paper hats.
The Detroit Festival of
the Arts, produced by the
University Cultural Center
Association and Wayne State
University, runs from 11
a.m.-8 p.m. Friday-Sunday,
Sept. 20-22, at the city's Uni-
versity Cultural Center.

Brackman has entertained at
celebrity galas and made per-
sonalized hats for stars from
Danny Kaye to Ben Vereen. She
appreciates the give and take
she finds in performing.
`That's what keeps me going,
developing and wanting to strive
for larger audiences," she says.
"I think that people can tap their
own creativity when they see
there's somebody like me out
there who's doing a really wild
thing.
"They can take a cue from
that and break through their
own barriers or mental blocks
and create things for them-
selves. It doesn't make a differ-
ence what they make so long as
they see things in a whole new
way." ❑
