Have You had Big Daddy's Tommy Salad Yet?
Or Our Fabulous Lamb Chops?

Welcome to the best Greek food this

the Freeway Plaza on 10 Mile be-
tween Haggerty and Halsted.
His first locale, a 2,600-square-
footer, is on 12 Mile and Farm-
ington Road in the Crowley
Shopping Plaza ... Two more are
expected to open within a year,
but only if the correct staffs can
be gotten to maintain the same
quality consistency.
The cinnamon crisp bagel
tastes like a cinnamon roll ... and
is Bean & Bagel's version of a
fragel, except it is not deep-fried.
It is a fine alternative for folks
watching their fat intake ... The
cinnamon crisp bagel is virtually
fat-free and has a wonderful
taste.
The goodie is among Bean &
Bagel's 18 varieties of bagels
which, incidentally, are all baked
at each individual store. They also
make their own cream cheeses,
sandwiches, etc.
Head corporate chef is Dino
Grecu, former head chef at Tam
O'Shanter Country Club for over
13 years, whose culinary concoc-
tions at Bean & Bagel are draw-
ing many raves.

ular plain bagel with imported
cinnamon and sugar caramelized
and baked on.
The taste is unbelievably good.
Charlie Kaye is a local gent ...
and his Bean & Bagel is not a
large chain operation ... At least
not yet.
25 YEARS AGO, a long-
haired Beatles look-alike from Mi-
ami joined the clergy at Temple
Israel on Walnut Lake Road in
West Bloomfield.
Come this Dec. 13-15, Rabbi
Harold Loss and wife Susan will
be honored for their 25 years of
service ... The big weekend will
include special services, a testi-
monial dinner and much more.
Those wanting to help can call
the Temple Israel offices, (810)
661-5700.
OK, BOARD members of
Ronald MacDonald House ... Di-
ane Fishman, Gary Granadier,
John Levy, Michael Hermanoff,
etc. ... time to get your food fash-
ion thinking caps on.
The Ronald MacDonald
House's annual event this year
will have each of the 25 board
members bringing his and her fa-
vorite hors d'oeuvres (as many as
they want) to be judged by per-
sonality tasters, Saturday, Nov.
16, at the Roostertail on Jeffer-
son ... And then eaten by the
guests.
Comic Rondell Sheridan will
be the featured entertainment at-
traction.

The group's dinner-dance
shindig raises money to support
families of children with illnesses.
Tariff will be $125 per person;
$200 patrons.
For more info, call Jackie Sun-
day, executive director of the lo-
cal Ronald MacDonald House,
(313) 745-5911.
DAVE FEKAY, author of The
Sensuous Kitchen, will return to
the local area with a catering op-
eration come next year.
Dave is a terrific chef/own-
er/manager/author and showman
who has been in the New Hamp-
shire and Vermont areas since
leaving Detroit years back.
Sure wish he was here today
to join Marty Wilk, owner of Ex-
calibur; Manuel Chavez, Ris-
torante Di Modesta bossman; and
myself in judging The Jewish
News' apple bake-off contest, with
baking by its employees cele-
brating launching of the new
AppleTree section.
RAIN OR SHINE, there'll be
no stopping the third annual
Family 5K Walk/Run or Stroll
and Block Party, Sunday, Sept.
29, 10 a.m., at Cobo Center.
It's to raise funds for opening
of Gilda's Club's free, nonprofit,
social and emotional support com-
munity center for men, women
and children with all types of can-
cer, plus their families and
friends.
Call Gilda's Club, (810) 851-
6557, or Motor City Striders,
(810) 544-9099.
Detroit's men in blue and De-
troit Fire Department clowns will
accompany the guys and gals
along the Greektown, Harmonie
Park, Grand Circus Park and
Washington Boulevard route.
4-YEAR-OLD Gloria Ruth
Oppenheirn, daughter of former
localites Marion and Sam Op-
penheim, now living in Las Ve-
gas, was crying bitterly when
Mother asked what was the mat-
ter ... "My new shoes hurt me" ...
Marion told little Gloria about
having them on the wrong feet ...
But she kept on crying ... "I
haven't got any other feet," she
said between sobs.
SURVEY BY Club Med dis-
covered that couples who dieted
on vacation argued three times
more often than those who didn't
watch their weight ... And couples
who didn't diet had three times
as many romantic moments.
MANY TIMES, when you ask
servers at dining spots how a cer-
tain dish is, they'll extol its good-
ness ... even though they've never
had it.
This isn't the case at places like
Capital Grille in Somerset Col-
lection North, whose superb
training program is such that
servers must know what they're
talking about.
Before working there, the wait-
persons are expected to taste
everything on the menu so they
can speak truthfully with cus-
tomers.
