So far Prime Minister
Binyamin Netanyahu has been
able to hold together his het-
erogenous coalition by speaking
with one message in Washington
and another in Tel Aviv.
But within the next few weeks
he will have to act on Hebron,
and it is very hard to see how any
decision he makes will go down
well with both Mr. Clinton (on
/--' whose goodwill he depends) and
the strong ultra-right-wing ele-
ments in his own constituency
(on whose goodwill he also de-
pends).
The right-wingers are already
making their voices heard in
protest rallies, newspaper ads
and, inevitably, on the Internet.
Particularly active in cyber-
\_ space is the Jewish community
/-' of Hebron, which recently sent
out a message from Brigadier
General (res.) Aharon Levran ex-
plaining why Israel should not
withdraw from Hebron.
Gen. Levran argues that the
understandings reached in Oslo
should be abrogated because
"they do not obligate a new gov-
ernment that was elected in or-
der to conduct an entirely
/— different policy ... Above all," he
adds, "if the Oslo agreements are
implemented they will lead to the
establishment of a Palestinian
state, and this contravenes the
interests of the State of Israel and
the declared policies of the pre-
sent government."
Gen. Levran is ready to disre-
gard not only agreements, but
also arithmetic. He argues that
/-• Hebron differs from other cities
in Judea and Samaria because
Jews and Arabs live there side
by side, though, he admits, "the
Arab population is several times
larger than the Jewish one."
This is an extraordinary way
of describing a situation where
Arabs outnumber Jews by sev-
eral hundred to one.
\-\ An even more extreme view is
(/ presented by Shmuel Sackett of
the "Zu Artzeinu" movement. In
May, he declares, "we voted
against a prime minister who
seemed to care more for the ene-
my than for his own people, and
not for a man we thought was
much better." Voters were cer-
tainly not influenced, Mr. Sack-
ett goes on, by Mr. Netanyahu's
"silly slogans" like "Peace with
/ Security."
Recent polls show that the "Zu
Artzeinu" leader is wrong, that
Likud voters want to continue
with the peace process almost to
the same extent as Labor voters.
This leads Mr. Peres to hope
that Mr. Netanyahu will soon be
needing him. And being a his-
\ tory buff, he may be encouraged
by the thought that despite be-
ing defeated three times for the
presidency, William Jennings
Bryan went on to become Sec-
retary of State under President
Wilson. 0

Roberta Peters

A singer of vocal radiance, Roberta Peters
illuminates the concert stage as one of America's
favorite artists of this century. Her beautiful voice,
great showmanship and winning charm have
continued to captivate worldwide audiences.

Although opera has been the center of her
artistic life, Miss Peters is also active in musicals. "The King and I," Noel Coward's
"Bittersweet," "Merry Widow" and as Maria in "The Sound of Music," all highly
praised, sold out engagements. In 1995 she returned to films in "City Hall."

She has often appeared in Israel, performing in a benefit concert for the
Roberta Peters Scholarship Fund at Tel Aviv University.

PAUL BORMAN

Morris Baker was an architect and a builder, but he was primarily a builder of
family, of community and of Jewish continuity. A Zionist leader and philanthropist,
he served as vice-president of Metro Detroit ZOA and was a member of ZOAs
national board and its national executive committee. Zionism and Israel were
Morrie Baker's "magnificent obsession." He and Beverly acquired a home in Netanya
and subsequently in Jerusalem to forge a personal link with Israel and its people.
Members of Congregation Shaarey Zedek and of the national board of CLAL, the
National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, they maintained a close, per-
sonal relationship with CLAI's founder, Rabbi Irving ("Yitz") Greenberg and with the
famed Talmud commentator, Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz.

A community leader in her own right, Beverly Baker is a Life Member of the
National Council of Jewish Women, a past Presidium-Member of the Brandeis
University National Women's Committee, a former Board member of the Women's
Division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Detroit and a board-member of Metro
Detroit ZOA. She is also a life member of ORT, Hadassah, WIZO, B'nai Brith Women,
Naamat, Friends of Hillel Day School and the Sisterhood of Congregation Adat
Shalom. An art enthusiast and collector, Beverly Baker is a graduate of the University
of Michigan School of Music and has taught music at the Berkley School System.
