This is an exceptionally beauti-
ful book about a little Jewish
girl, Rachel, and her family in
Poland. It is a story of dreams
and hope, despair and anguish.
Rachel must stay in bed in
the apartment where her fami-
ly lives, in a basement in War-
saw. She is ill, and she has no
shoes. The family subsists on
stale bread and dreams of the
time when they ate oranges.
One afternoon, Rachel's fa-
ther receives a gift of paints
and brushes. During the day,
while her parents work, Rachel
decorates the walls of her
home. She paints bright flow-

ers of deep blue, yellow and
pink.
After a time, though, the
paint begins to fade. Mother
promises to buy more paints af-
ter the war. Rachel hopes to
move to Paris, where "won-
derful artists live."
But Rachel does not go to
Paris. Instead, she and her fam-
ily are sent to the Warsaw
Ghetto.

University. Paperback, $15.95.

If you are bored, or just looking
for something new and fun to
do with your children, this is
the guide; there is none better.
Ellyce Field's Kids Catalog

activities throughout Michigan.
It includes names, addresses,

able at parks, museums, farmers
markets, sporting activities, zoos
and any other place that your
child would find enticing. (It
might leave you ready for a 12-
hour nap, of course, but that's
another story.)
The book also includes a
very useful monthly guide to
special events around the state.

Songs from the Circle
by Sue Roberts. Naris Records.

The music to this is quite nice,
and Ms. Roberts (who wrote
many of the songs) has a lovely
voice. Some of the songs are
really good, especially those
that focus on nature and the
power of imagination. "Sea-
sons" is an especially nice song,
and "Froggie Woggie Doodle"
is a lot of fun, with plenty of
sounds that children will enjoy.
