It was of- ten alluded to during 40 years of family gatherings. During those four decades, both some- body and his brother main- tained their innocence. The time came when some- body's mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness. She had baked a lot of chocolate chip cookies during her 75 years, and during that time it had seemed as though her cookie- making days would never end. But that had been an illusion. Somebody's mother began to move slowly and only with the aid of a walker or a cane. Soon she was confined to bed. When she could no longer speak, she wrote. At a time when no one else was around, somebody snuck into his mother's room and lay next to her in bed..He held her hand and stroked it softly. He talked to her in whispers about their life together. He told her he loved her, and she nodded. "Can you keep a secret?" he asked. Another nod. "You won't tell anybody?" She shook her head sideways. After glancing around to be sure no one was listening, somebody shared a secret with his mother, whispering in her ear everything he knew about chocolate chip cookies. Some- body's mother smiled, and they shared a final hug. ❑ Copyright 1996 by Chick Moorman and Personal Power Press.
