• well. Some Israelis wish each
other Merry Christmas on this
day, in jest, of course; but it is an
indication of the gradual influ-
ence of the holiday. Matt
Nesvisky of the Jerusalem Post
seeks to indicate there is no re-
ligious element by calling the
day Krissmiss, without the
Christ.
Some militant secularists

• seize the opportunity deliber-
ately to irritate the rabbinate
and make a great show of ob-
serving the day. One commen-
tator has termed them "honorary
Christians" for a day. Yet one
non-religious Jew admitted that
while he had no compunctions
about attending a New Year's
Eve party, he could not bring
himself to wish anyone a "Hap-
• py New Year." That greeting, he
felt, belongs only in September
at Rosh Hashanah time.
A week later, there is even
more widespread observance of
New Year's Eve, known as
Sylvester, a name once used in
European countries, long since
abandoned there but preserved
in Israel. The name comes from
a 4th century saint, not noted for
anything in particular except
that he had been a pope. The
press and billboards widely ad-
vertise Sylvester parties, with
the usual midnight festivity.
Every year there also is a
clash with the rabbinate which
seeks to discourage the obser-
vance. Hotels which advertise
Sylvester parties are often
threatened with removal of their
kashrut hechsher. When New
Year's Eve falls on a Friday
night, you can well imagine the
furor.
There seems little doubt that
Christmas and New Year will
come to assume a place in Is-
rael's holiday schedule, though
hopefully we will never reach the
stage of that American Jewish
family which used to mark
Krissmiss every year with all the
trimmings until one day their lit-
tle son, having reached an age of
understanding, came running
home with a great discovery:
"Mama, the goyim celebrate
Christmas,too." ❑
