When we first came to Israel
many years ago, we used to re-
mark that December 25 came
and went and we hardly knew it
was Christmastime.
We used to tell the story of the
Hancock family, headed by a
British businessman whose lit-
tle son went to a Jewish school.
At this time of year, he would
come home unhappy because all
the little children were cele-
brating Chanukah. His parents
tried to comfort him, pointing out
that they had their own Christ-
mas holiday. The boy was not
comforted and would reply, "Yes,
but they have eight days; and we
only have one. Daddy, why do we
have to be different? Why can't
we be like everyone else?"
In intervening years, much
has changed. What with the per-
vasive influence of cable TV, the
Christmas mood is beginning to
make itself evident; and, at
times, one almost expects Reb
Santa Claus to make his ap-
pearance.
There is even a market for
Christmas trees, but not what
you think. For some years, the
Jewish National Fund has culled
suitable trees from its forests
and distributed them free of
charge to embassies and church-
es. Individual Christians and in-

stitutions pay a small service
charge. Last year, 10,000 trees
were distributed. The JNF does
not miss the opportunity to
make a pitch. With each tree
goes a greeting card, suggesting
that the recipient might wish to
make a contribution to enable
the JNF to replenish its supply
next year.
The municipalities of Jeru-
salem and Haifa, where there
are large Christian populations,
also distribute trees.
Restaurants along the Tel
Aviv waterfront, where tourists
gather, have for several years
put up Christmas decorations,
small trees and even images of
Santa Claus. All this had noth-
ing to do with Christianity, the
owners say. It's an effort to make
non-Jewish tourists feel at home.
The religious aspects of the hol-
iday are observed in Bethlehem.
Visitors to Haifa are surprised
to discover that at the end of De-
cember, the lower end of Zion-
ism Avenue is bedecked with
colorful street lights and other
holiday decorations, with Santa
Claus figures in many of the
store windows. This is because
the street runs through the
Christian Arab neighborhood of
Wadi Nisnas.
The spirit fills the air and pen-
etrates into the Jewish areas as
