To see a gem of an old (1719)
Italian synagogue in mint condi-
tion, visit the Italian Museum and
Synagogue at 27 Hfflel St.
The Orthodox shul was
brought over from Conegliano
Veneto, a small town near Venice
that no longer has a Jewish pop-
ulation. The tiny but fully func-
tioning synagogue has lovely
chandeliers from Ferrara. Some
of the 18th century wooden bench-
es are from Reggio Emilia.
The women's gallery has been
restored to its original position
above the hall. The gallery's beau-
tifully carved, decorative wooden
lattice-work screen (part original,
part reconstruction) can be opened
to allow women to view the room

ern Wall, Yad Vashem, the
Israel Museum, the Jewish
Quarter in the Old City of
Jerusalem. These are traditional
tourist sites in Israel's capital, but
there are also many new or off-
the-beaten-track places you
should experience during your
next trip.
Two walking streets in
Jerusalem, streets full of small,
attractive restaurants, shops and
galleries, are Rivlin and Yoel Sa-
lomen. Near Jaffa Road and Zion
Square, the two streets used to
house run-down carpentry shops
and leather factories.
Some thought was given by the
city government to tearing down
the old, but architecturally sound
and charming buildings and erect-
ing a new one. However, wiser
heads prevailed; and now the pre-
served, cleaned-up structures are
on both sides of the pedestrian-
friendly thoroughfares.

The traditional Ben Yehuda
walking street is still busy and
fun. I recently saw great (free) out-
door performances by a South
American singing trio, a juggler
whose flaming torches were ex-
citing but scary, a very good Russ-
ian violinist and a young guitarist
playing and singing Beatles'
songs.
When you walk Ben Yehuda,
be sure to have a meal at the
Atara restaurant. Do it soon be-
cause there are rumors that it
might become a Pizza Hut. The
Shemesh restaurant is another
place that is the target of the same
rumor.

there is a collection of Italian Ju-
daica in the museum. The de-
scriptions of the items on display
are in English as well as in He-
brew. On a self-guided tour, you
will see a Torah ark crafted by a

eral pieces of 18th century equip-
ment for ritual washing.
The oldest item on display in
the museum is a plaque dating
from the 15th century decorated
with typical, delicate Renaissance
designs, the plaque reads: "Know
