These and others eagerly ac- cepted the invitation to address this island congregation. They are paid no fee for their speaking engagements; the congregation pays only air fare and hotel ex- penses. But, of course, they do get to enjoy a weekend on beau- tiful Nantucket Island. "They love being in Nantuck- et," says Ms. Bernstein, who is the driving force behind the speakers' program. A lawyer and political consul- tant, she uses her contacts and networking skills to line up speakers — eight or 10 every summer. This summer's guests will in- clude Fred Goldman, father of Ron Goldman, the other victim in the Nicole Brown Simpson slaying. Also on the roster this summer are columnist and au- thor Dennis Prager and Dr. Bri- an Weiss, a psychiatrist and author from Yale University. Ms. Bernstein launched the project seven years ago when she gamely volunteered to invite two speakers for that summer. By now it's a well-known program which has been covered by both local papers. The guest speakers attract not only congregants but many non-Jewish Nantucketers, too. Turnouts have been as high as 500 for an especially promi- nent guest. Indeed, it's become a highlight on an island that offers an array of activities. "People look forward to it," says Ms. Bernstein. `They ask, 'Who's going to speak this summer? What books should I read in advance?"' Two other projects are unique to this congregation. First, it's probably the only one anywhere which has scrimshaw mezzuzot available for sale to interested visitors. Scrimshaw is the art of ink drawing on ivory, usually done by sailors. The congregation re- cruited a Nantucket resident, who makes the scrimshaw de- sign and then mounts it on the mezzuzah. It's an especially appropriate mezzuzah for a congregation lo- cated on an island which was once a famous whaling center. And the scrimshaw mezzuzah (which sells for $145 with scroll) is a popular item. "It's on homes in many cities — and it's on yachts, too," says Ms. Bernstein. Also unusual is the congrega- tion's specially designed yarmulke. Not only does it have whales embroidered on it, but it's made of a special fabric known as "Nantucket Red." "Nantucket Red," explains Ms. Bernstein, is a special type of cot- ton fabric traditionally worn by 73
