lisheva Gotlib was busy this day.
It was a chance to make decora-
tions for her family's sukkah, bounce -
around inside a gigantic apple and
eat some pizza.
The Bais Yaakov first-grader did
all of that and more.
So did at least 1,000 children and
their parents, taking advantage of an almost
perfect late-summer afternoon at the
10th annual Apples and Honey pre-Rosh
Hashanah event on Sunday at the Agency
for Jewish Education.
Children had an opportunity, with the
help of Rabbi Ahron Davidson, to put the
finishing touches on shofars. Others made
colorful decorations for sukkahs and for their
Rosh Hashanah tables.
"It was incredible," said event coordina-
tor Sue Stettner. "The thing that made it
very special was the diversity of our com-
munity that came out on a beautiful day.

u_,

The weather was truly a gift from God. I
spoke to many people from all walks of
life — from the intermarried to Lubavitch
Orthodox families. It was wonderful to see
everyone come together. I think that mak-
ing it outside for a fall festival really worked
out."
Children also had an opportunity to jump
around in a giant apple as part of The Jew-
ish News' launching of "The Apple Tree," a
much anticipated monthly section covering
the Detroit Jewish family experience. Edited
by Elizabeth Applebaum, "The Apple Tree"
will debut in the Sept. 20 Jewish News.
As diverse as Sunday's attendance were
the groups co-sponsoring the event. Included
among the sponsors were Jewish Experi-
ences For Families, The Jewish News,
Agency For Jewish Education, JARC, Sinai
Hospital Guild, Jewish Family Service,
Fresh Air Society and area synagogues and
agencies. ❑
