have eschewed efforts at con-
version or even the necessity of
conversion of Jews are bypassed
by this one relatively small
group. In a recent article in the
Michigan Catholic, Monsignor
F. Gerald Martin wrote about
conversion and how we ask so
\—; many questions about the "right
/— way." He recognizes that in the
end, it is not our thinking about
the right track, "It's really God's
question to answer." Last year
in the church-synagogue tour
sponsored by the Ecumenical In-
stitute both the Lutheran min-
ister and the Roman Catholic
priest talked about making
choices; but where Protestants
D used to convert to Catholicism
and vice versa, we now recognize
people choose a worship style
comfortable to them. The em-
phasis increasingly in Christian
circles is that those who are loy-
al to God will find ways of living
out that loyalty in a variety of
situations.
And that brings me to a final
point. The problem with the ec-
> umenical movement is that it
has been organizational and so-
cial at its heart. It has tried to
deal with problems without deal-
ing with the religious dimension,
almost ruling that out in discus-
sions. The more I have worked
in ecumenism, the more I am
aware that people whose com-
mitment is to God and seek to
live that commitment out in a
variety of situations, are accept-
ing of others and recognize a va-
riety of ways for expressing that
commitment. They are not dis-
appointed by human failure.
They are not threatened by those
who think differently. They have
patience, commitment to some-
thing greater than the moment,
and see themselves as a part of
Tikkun Olam, the ongoing re-
demption of the world.
When missions to the Jews
first came to America around
1800, the challenge to the Jew-
ish community was to look with-
in and find out why Christianity
could be attractive to Jews. I
have often emphasized that the
real strength of dialogue is found
in deepening one's own commit-
ments. Yet the questions raised
by the Southern Baptists are ex-
tremely important for all of us.
Having met far more Christians
who have chosen Judaism than
Jews who have chosen Chris-
tianity, I think we have mutual
questions. Have we adequately
provided the opportunities for
our children and youth to deal
with their own faith? And final-
ly, have we yet learned with
Monsignor Martin that more is
in the hands of God than our
own understanding? May we
have the courage to begin the
real dialogue that is the basis of
true mutuality. ❑
