/—make decisions based on facts
and law. We instruct juries to
disregard race, religion, ethnici-
ty and gender, and we are oblig-
ated to disregard those matters
ourselves when making deci-
sions. It's unfortunate when
something like this comes into
the race.”
David Gad-Harf, the executive
director of the Jewish Commu-
/-nity Council, said Ms. Small's
campaign literature seems to be
a letter of endorsement by nu-
merous people in the Jewish
community.
"In my mind it's similar to the
ads that appear at election time
in The Jewish News with simi-
lar lists of names and citations
of involvements and Jewish af-
„liations,” he said. "We as a corn-
' munity have to decide if that
kind of strategy crosses the line
of propriety, whether it's a direct
mailing or an advertisement in

defies our concept of judicial tem-
perament."
Ms. Small said she is very
careful not to use names without
permission and spoke personal-
ly to everyone who appeared on
the list. She said she has notes
from those discussions.
Howard Linden, a Southfield
attorney and treasurer of Ms.
Small's campaign, agrees the
passage was taken out of context.
He said there is a natural sense
of security among one's own
roots, no matter what race, reli-
gion or ethnicity those roots are
in.
Ms. Small said, "We talk about
religion in politics and people get

Some of the individuals listed
as Small supporters questioned
the use of their names.
Mr. Hermelin said he may
have given Ms. Small permission
_9 use his name as a supporter,
but not specifically for this type
of literature.
Added J. Leonard Hyman,
who was also listed in the liter-

one would bring religion into pol-

Meet The Artist

A look at the man behind today's front cover.

The inspiration behind our cov-
er illustration for Rosh
Hashanah 5757 is Seymour
Chwast, director of New York's
acclaimed Push Pin design
group. For 42 years at Push Pin,
Mr. Chwast has been a pioneer
in illustration and graphic de-
sign in the realms of advertis-
ing, publishing, packaging,
corporate design, animated
films and record covers.
He has written and/or illus-
„rated an array of children's
books, including the recently
published Mr. Merlin and the
Turtle (Greenwillow) and the
Chanukah book Just Enough Is
Plenty (Viking).
Art director Robyn Katz ap-
proached Mr. Chwast in July
with a proposal to create some-
thing refreshingly different to
herald 5757, a year when the Is-
rael Museum in Jerusalem
plans a Chwast retrospective.
He responded with a witty and
wise rendering of an ancient
rite, done up in modern, vibrant
colors.
"Art for Jewish subjects tends

to be heavy," he says, "but this
illustration, about one of the
High Holidays, has a lighter
spirit. But it's not inconsistent
with the themes of Rosh
Hashanah," he says with a
smile in his voice.
After all, Rosh Hashanah is
the birthday of the world.
