ne piece of Judy Cantor's
collage of Jewish women
is a risque image of a
somewhat rebellious 20-
something, decked out in her
bathing suit as she squints into
the sun on a beach somewhere
in northern Michigan.
No, she is not wearing a
thong. They didn't exist at the
turn of the century.
This young woman has on a
suit that would leave pretty
funky tan lines. Starting with a
scarf that covers most of her
hair, her outfit includes a thigh
length A-line top, long bloomers,
dark tights and Roman sandals.
Only her arms poke out of the
ensemble.
Her name is Anna Prentis.
Yes, the Anna Prentis, wife of
Meyer Prentis, General Motors
official and philanthropist.
"Isn't that a gem?" Mrs. Can-
tor said.
The photo is a small portion
of a display that will be coming
to the Detroit Historical Muse-
um Nov. 7-March 23 as a part
of a national tour. Titled "Be-
coming American Women:
Clothing and the Jewish Immi-
grant Experience," the showing
will include outfits and other ar-
ti facts that document the way

Jewish women adapted to
American life around the turn
of the century.
The Jewish Historical Society
of Michigan is gathering photos
taken between 1880 and 1920
for a companion exhibit on local
Jewish women to accompany
the national display.
With the exception of Anna
Prentis' bathing beauty shot, the
photos already collected are
mostly wedding portraits or for-
mal dress sittings. Many of the
families at the time did not have
access to a camera for more ca-
sual snapshots.
"Cameras were expensive, so<
most of the photographic work
was done in studios," Mrs. Can-
tor said. "Many people would
have only one or two photos of
themselves and those would be
in formal dress."
Mrs. Cantor, the curator of
the local display, hopes people
can take the time during the
next few weeks to locate such
photos for the display. El
