AVA CARMEL SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS "In Genesis it is written that the first task God gave to man was to name the animals. As a ma- rine biologist, one of my tasks is to provide suitable names for newly discovered sea creatures." Dr. Bella Galil works at the National Institute of Oceanog- raphy in Haifa, which is part of Israel Oceanographic and Lim- nological Research, a nonprofit governmental corporation es- tablished in 1967 with the aim of generating knowledge and technology for wise use of Israel's marine and freshwater re- sources. Grand Opening Sale! The saber tooth viper fish. The Haifa Institute juts right out into the Mediterranean Sea, the waters of which are the focus of its research. Dr. Galil explains that modern oceanographic re- search began with the founding of marine stations in Naples and Monaco, in the 19th century. Most studies of the Mediter- ranean have focused on its west- em half The eastern section, the Levantine Basin or Levant, which borders on Crete, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Egypt, has barely been explored, especially its deeper waters. For the past four years, Dr. Galil has led 12 cruises to sites west of the Israeli coast, to gath- er specimens in water over 1,500 meters deep. She explains that at such great depths the envi- ronment is unusually harsh. Pressure is 150 times what it is at sea level; there is almost total darkness and very little nour- ishment filters down. Thus, this is the poorest part of the Mediter- ranean both in the number of species and number of speci- mens. The team, which used a trawl to gather its samples, collected 40 deep-sea species, of which 11 are new records for the Levant Basin (i.e., recorded there for the first time) and 16 more are new records for the Israeli coastal re- gion. They were also fortunate enough to find a new endemic species, i.e., one found only in this region. It is a blind crus- tacean, which was named Lebantocaris Hornungae, after a veteran chemist at the insti- tute.
