When Arafat's daughter, Zahwa,
was born in Paris, the proud
grandmother reported that the
child looked like her father. Re-
porters and photographers has-
tened to get a picture of the
new-born with a three-day
growth of stubble.

When fatherhood tri-
umphed. Three months after

the birth of their child, Ariel Co-
hen and his wife decided that she
would return to her work as a
lawyer; and he would -take a year
off to rear the child. When he got
a call to serve in the reserves for
a month, the army refused to ac-
cept his request that the service
be deferred on the grounds that
he was needed at home. Cohen
threatened to show up at the
army base with the babe in his
arms. The army backed down.

The Palestinians want
"their" money. Mohammed

Nashashibi, Arafat's minister of
finance, on the delay of contribu-
tions: "The donor countries will
never succeed in imposing their
socio-economic preferences on the
Palestinians. Let them not give
us a headache about superviso-
ry demands. Our system is al-
ready open and transparent. Now
our people in Gaza must see the
money, the implementation of the
projects and not just meetings in
Paris and Washington. Why are
the donor countries waiting?
Where is the money?"

The richest baby in Israel.

The Meir Maternity Hospital in
Kfar Saba presents each newborn
baby with a gift, comprised of
nursery essentials and, as a spe-
cial bonus, a Mifal Hapayis tick-
et for the national lottery. A local
family, welcoming the arrival of
its second child, discovered that
their ticket had won a million
shekels.

In Israel the world turns
backwards. A keen-eyed ob-

server has noted that on Israel's
television daily news broadcast,
the signature theme is of a
twirling globe of the earth which
turns to the west (to the left)
rather than to the east (to the
right) as in reality. The observer
questions if this indicates a slant
to the news?
Theft on a grand scale. De-
spite the annual production of the
Technion and the immigration
from Russia, there is still a short-
age of some 2,000 top-level en-

gineers in Israel. The result is
that high-tech companies bold-
ly and consistently steal engi-
neers from their competitors by
offering higher salaries. In 1994,
Israel's high-tech exports
amounted to 2.2. billion dollars.

Good ideas worth money.

Last year, Israel's military es-
tablishment received 5,722 sug-
gestions for improving efficiency,
economy and safety. Of these,
30,254 were implemented and
bonuses totaling more than half
a million shekels were paid to
alert observers.
Memorable quotations. Shi-
mon Peres, addressing the Knes-
set after signing the Oslo
agreement and before a series of
bus explosions, festively declared
to the nation, "One hundred
years of terrorism have come to
an end."

They want to make it legaL

The present Knesset has before
it a bill which would give legal
standing to a woman's right to
maintain her maiden name after
marriage, if she so wishes.

Arabs demand their rights.

An ad seeking employees to work
in the Israel census had indicat-
ed that candidates must have
served in the Israeli army. Arab
spokesmen complained this con-
stituted discrimination against
them since they are not drafted.
Legal authorities justified their
complaints, and the restrictive
clause was removed.

Why the Arabs now want
peace. Dr. Hasham el Djani, a

Syrian political commentator, has
lectured his compatriots who call
for war against Israel: "We must
fight against Israel with the
weapon of peace. We can over-
come it better by peace than by
war. Peace will bring to an end
its arrogance and its patronizing
attitude and transform it from an
aggressive militaristic nation to
one compelled to co-exist with its
surroundings. After one or two
generations of peace its army will
become weak and its arsenal of
weapons will turn rusty ... "

Come to Israel and live
longer. Life expectancy for men

in Israel during 1989-92 was sec-
ond only to Japan among 22 in-
dustrial nations of the world with
the age of 74.5. Israeli women's
rating was 78.2 years, but that
was in the 19th place among 22
nations.

The most powerful woman
in Israel. This is the appellation

given to Galia Maor whose posi-
tion as general manager of Bank
Leumi gives her enormous fi-
nancial clout. 0
