Israel, Russia
Discuss Property
Jerusalem (JTA) — Foreign
Minister David Levy met with
Russia's ambassador to Israel
to discuss the transfer of deeds
of Jerusalem properties from
the former Soviet Union to Rus-
sia.
The issue of asset ownerships
has been a subject of dispute
between Israel and Russia since
the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Among the buildings involved
are the Jerusalem District Court
building, which will be admin-
istered by the Russian Church,
and a parking lot in the center
of the city, which will be admin-
istered privately.
Bedouin Plans
Are Rejected
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's High
Court of Justice has rejected a
petition from a Bedouin tribe
that opposed plans to move
it from an encampment near
Ma'aleh Adumim to allow
development of the community.
The justices ruled that the
Bedouins did not have any legal
claim to the land on the out-
skirts of Jerusalem and that the
alternative site offered them was
habitable.
It also said the alternative site
is located in Area C, which is un-
der full Israeli control, and not
within Area B, which is under
Palestinian control, as the pe-
titioners had claimed.
Hanegbi Named
Acting Minister
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu has appointed
Health Minister Tzachi Haneg-
bi to serve as acting justice min-
ister.
Mr. Hanegbi, who will retain
the health portfolio, will assume
the Cabinet position given up
last month by Ya'acov Ne'eman.
Mr. Ne'eman resigned as jus-
tice minister after police
launched an investigation of him
for allegedly obstructing court
proceedings relating to the case
of Shas Knesset member Aryeh
Deri.
Mr. Deri, a former interior
minister in the government of
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin,
resigned from his Cabinet post
in 1993 after being indicted on
charges of bribery, fraud and
breach of public trust.
Mr. Netanyahu has said Mr.
Ne'eman could return to head
the Justice Ministry if the
police investigation ends with-
out an indictment.
