\ Wishing the Jewish Community a Very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year! Aerobic Riders •• JACK WILLIAMS SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS While it's generally agreed that you won't rock your way to opti- mal condition on the new genre of aerobic riders, Consumer Reports magazine has singled out a ma- chine it says will provide a good workout for most people. The Weslo CardioGlide, which retails for about $199, received the only stamp of approval of five non- motorized exercise riders in the magazine's survey. A distant second in their rat- ings was ExerHealth's HealthRid- er, followed by ExerHealth's aeROBICRider, CSA's E-Force and CSA's E-Force Sport T 1210. Consumer Reports said the CardioGlide "challenged everyone who tried it, especially at its high- er resistance settings." It also proved challenging in an- other respect, providing the most difficulty in assembly of the four riders tested. In a California State Universi- ty Northridge study, CardioGlide was shown to cause back pain among some participants. How- ever, testers found it came closer than the HealthRider or the E- Force to equaling the aerobic de- mands of a treadmill. The Weslo CardioGlide is sold by Sears under a different name: TAfestyler Cardiofit. Aerobic riders require the user to pull with the arms and push with the legs, activating two ma- jor muscle groups. Because you move with your body weight against gravity, heav- ier people who are not physically fit may have trouble adapting ini- tially. 0 fag 1014 11-QP.442,;. , " The Marvin & Betty Danto Family Health Care Center A Health Care & Retirement Corporation Facility Opening late 1996 • • • • Jack Williams is a writer for Copley News Service. Maple Fat Freedom Bombarded by admonitions to cut calories and forgo fat, more and more of us seem to be adopt- ing a fatalist philosophy: Life is too short to be dominated by de- nial. According to American Demo- graphics magazine, the percent- age of Americans who eat what they want, when they want it, ir- respective of the latest in dietary directives, was 64 percent in 1994. In 1977, the figure was 45 per- cent. The American Dietetic Asso- ciation has documented the same trend, reporting that 35 percent of Americans say they are per- sistently pursuing a balanced diet, compared with 44 percent in 1991 and 39 percent in 1993. But rather than representing a leap to hedonism, it just might mean that we're more honest in responding to surveys these days.
