This remarkable development
has not come about by accident.
It is the result of painstaking pro-
motion undertaken by a little
known body which goes by the
name of Institute for the Trans-
lation of Hebrew Literature.
Founded in 1962, it serves in ef-
fect as a literary agency. Its ex-
perts carefully survey new books
as they come off the press in Is-
rael, select the best for transla-
tion and offer the works to
publishers abroad. Since there is
a reputation to maintain, only
the very best are chosen.
Foreign publishers were at

first not easily convinced that an
interesting Hebrew novel or chil-
dren's book would necessarily
have any appeal to readers in
their countries. First experiments
were successful, and repeat or-
ders began to come in. No mat-
ter what their content, novels by
Amos Oz and A.B. Yehoshua
seem to have universal appeal
and are assured of foreign sales
from the beginning. The institute
does not deal with non-fiction,
most of which is handled through
academic circles.
The institute's task is not fin-
ished when rights are sold to a
foreign publisher. Literary crit-
ics in the overseas press are cul-
tivated, and their attention called
to the appearance of new works
with special reference to success
already achieved by these books
in other countries. Twice a year,
a high-level journal is published
in English, with book reviews, ex-
cerpted translations and schol-
arly studies of trends in Hebrew
literature.
There are remote lands in the
world where Israel is known
more for its modern literature
than for its political difficulties
with its neighbors.

read Afrikaans, Bulgarian, Flem-
ish, Serbo-Croatian, Esperanto
or Urhobo? You can safely rec-
ommend a good Hebrew book to
them. ❑

espite being
banned by
the Federa-
tion of Jor-
danian Writers for
having contact
with the "enemy,"
popular Jordanian
TV comedians
Hisham Yanis and
Nabil Sawalha
have recently com-
pleted an Israeli
tour: 16 shows in
18 days — 14 in
Arabic and two in
English.
Their show,

Peace, Oh Peace,

which played to
packed houses of
more than 1,000 people, is a po-
litical satire dealing with the
Arab-Israeli conflict. Tackling
that conflict through the use of
biblical stories, Hisham says,
"We try to satirize the idea of
killing, starting with Cain and
Abel and with Joshua capturing
Jericho — where the whole prob-
lem started — and with Samson
and Delilah, maybe the first at-
tempt at a love affair between

two peoples."
Their sketches, which include
parodies of famous Jordanian,
Palestinian and Israeli person-
alities, make fun of absolutely
everything and everybody in-
volved in the peace process and
the Arab world.
Performances in Israel are
sponsored jointly by the Cameri
Theater and Haifa's Beit Ha-
gafen Theater. ❑
