problems, according to an item
in the September 1996 issue of
Playboy magazine.
"Among the offending items
were a dead moth in a biscuit,
a large worm in a salad, half a
spider on a fruit plate and black
hairs — 'phylum unknown' — in
cinnamon rolls.
"As long as the government is
inspecting our luggage, maybe
they could spare a moment to in-
spect our dinner, too."
The elegant, award-winning
Capital Grille that opened at
Somerset Collection North on
West Big Beaver in Troy to the
rave of steak-lovers throughout
Michigan may be renowned for
excellent beef on its menu, but
don't count out its other special-
ties ... Seafood, like the large
broiled north Atlantic lobsters,
as well as fresh grilled swordfish
and salmon ... Food is served via
"arm service" ... This means that
no trays are utilized and servers
use their arms to hold all entrees
... The wine list is huge and quite
good.

At one time considered among
the best servers in the restau-
rant game while at Mario's and
the former City Grill, Mark Pau-
tuk, also a top managerial
maitre d' host, is now general
manager at Carl's Chop House
on Grand River.
When President Clinton's
train pulled into Royal Oak re-
cently, local pianist David Syme
was there to keep the crowds en-
thused ... High point of David's
performance was his rendition
of "Stars And Stripes Forever"
as thousands of cheering spec-
tators welcomed the President
to their city.
Dave is appearing Wednesday
and Thursday nights, from 7:30
p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Whitney
on Woodward, and has his own
radio program, "Play It Again,
Syme," heard every Friday from
5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on WLLZ-AM
560 ... His eight CDs are avail-
able at most area record stores.
CONGRATS ... to former
West Bloomfield resident Mark
Shopnick ... on his 50th birthday
... Surprise party was given for
him by wife Barbara at Ed De-
bevic's restaurant in Arizona ...
"Surprise!" was yelled out by
about 60 people, including for-
mer-Detroiters Sam and Marsha
Krinsky, Judy and Bobby Singer,
Jobie and Larry Rosen, Sheila
and Gene Kollenberg and Steve
and Lynn Shopnick ... The
restaurant is a '50s-type opera-
tion and everyone attending
came dressed in Harley-David-
son attire ... Mark is an avid rid-
er of the popular bike in and
about Scottsdale ... He and Bar-
bara live in nearby Cave Creek.
VINO PICKS ... by Roger
Petri of Mac & Ray's ...
Mer & Soleil Chardonnay
1994 ... Another great wine from
Chuck Wagner, who made his
reputation at the renowned Cay-
mus Winery. This chardonnay
has it all, body, ripe, exotic pear
and pineapple, and just the right
amount of oak to give it a but-
tery finish. About $32. ****1/2.
DRIVE a clean car and give

MAIL DEPT.... from Magene
Richman ... "My husband Sam
was at Sinai Hospital over four
weeks with triple bypass surgery
and other complications.
"The entire staff at Sinai was
A+ and then some. They were
wonderful. All the nurses in the
various units were fantastic."
Instead of taking up oodles of
space, which Dee Shapiro and
plastic surgeon hubby Marshall
Shapiro are running out of at
home, Dee's latest dance floor
conquest prizes sound more rea-
sonable.
She won another 22, 12 firsts
and 10 seconds, at a recent dance
competition held at the Hyatt-
Regency here, and was given one
trophy plus the rest in stickers.
Marshall was about ready to
hang the trophies from their ceil-
ing ... which he still may have to
do if Dee keeps winning bsllroom
awards, and other competitions
don't give stickers ... Unless he
can give his home a facelift job. ❑
