f'Sbuncti) Zovub "One Life To Live" Jews typically don't have a presence on daytime TV The ABC soap hopes to change that with a special Rosh Hashanah episode. ALICE BURDICK SCHWEIGER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS A pies, honey and soap? While an unusual combi- nation to be sure, ABC's day- time serial "One Life To Live" thought it would make for some interesting viewing at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13. That's when Llanview, Pa.'s most influen- tial family, the Buchanans, will celebrate Rosh Hashanah. Nora . Gannon Buchanan (Hillary B. Smith) will serve the High Holiday meal, pass out yarmulkes, light candles and ex- plain all the customs of the Jewish New Year. The religious feast, which is the first one ever on the show, will include the tra- ditional apples, honey and challah. "The Rosh Hashanah dinner came about because we wished to celebrate the cultural differences of the important characters on our show," says Leah Laiman, "One Life to Live" co-head writer. "Since Nora is Jew- ish and Rosh Hashanah is such a major holiday in the Jewish religion, we felt it would be appropriate for her to acknowl- edge it. We also thought it would be a good opportunity to share some of the Jewish customs that some of our viewers might not know about." Suprisingly, there are not many Jewish actors, actresses or characters on the soaps.
