Happiest of

ter. A few years ago, with the
blessing and assistance of the
Technion, Ben-Gurion Univer-
sity of the Negev inaugurated an
undergraduate program in cer-
tain major technological fields.
Tadmor notes that by the year
2010 the communications in-
dustry in the world will reach a
turnover of $10 trillion. Israel
can qualify for a good percentage
of that if it can supply the per-
sonnel. One of the problems is
that Israel's youth are being
tempted into the study of law
and business. Private colleges of-
fering programs in these fields
are mushrooming all over the
land. They publish large display
advertisements in the press, im-
plying their graduates face suc-
cessful careers as lawyers or
business people.
In response, the Technion is
now planning to penetrate the
high schools and offer prelimi-
nary courses there which will
provide advance credits toward
a degree when the students en-
ter the Technion. Promotion will
make it clear that material suc-
cess is no less available in the
fields of technology. We must
make this clear to the youth,
Tadmor declares.
During their undergraduate
years, the students sometimes
complain about the heavy bur-
den of studies; but there is no in-
tention to lower standards. "Our
competitive edge in the world lies
in the quality of our engineers,"
Tadmor adds, "and if we cannot
keep that up, it will lead to na-
tional disaster."
What do students think of
their studies after they have
graduated and have practiced for
half a dozen years or more? The
Neaman Institute conducted a
survey among Technion alumni.
Asked if they found a connection
between their studies and the
challenges of their present work,
92 percent recorded such con-
nection. Would you recommend
to a friend or family member
that he study at the Technion?
Replies in the affirmative came
from 87 percent. Why did they
choose Technion for their uni-
versity education? High stan-
dards and Technion prestige
rated first for 72 percent.
One question was not asked
and remains unanswered. Is the
superior quality of Israel's engi-
neers due to the Jewish genes or
to the high standards at the
Technion — or perhaps both? ❑
