This may well be yet another example of a road-side shrine, in which trav- elers would appeal to their gods for a safe journey. It is possible that the smashing of the cult ob- jects occurred in conjunction with the religious reforms of King Josi- ah, who sought to purify the en- tire kingdom of Judah from all >traces of idolatry. ❑ May the cowling Year be filled with health and happiness for all our family and friends, May the corning Year be filled with health and happiness for all our and friends. GREAT LAKES HEALTH PLAN Israel Faces Earthquakes CARL ALPERT SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS In Israeli terminology, an earth- ') quake could be the unexpected result of an election, an econom- ic collapse, an internal revolt, a major aggression from without or just an ordinary seismological upheaval of the earth. It is ironic that when geologi- cal experts last year warned that an earthquake was imminent there, with Lebanon and Kiry- at Shmona as likely centers, they had in mind the conventional shake and not military activity. The warnings are now being re- newed and again with reference to ground trembles. The area has a historic record of earthquakes, and the Bible makes reference to them. Ar- chaeologists have uncovered un- mistakable evidence of vast destruction wrought by quakes in centuries gone by. In more modern times, the last major up- heaval, in 1927, hit Jerusalem and Safed particularly hard, with 300 casualties and 1,000 build- ings destroyed. Before that, the 1837 quake between the Huleh and the Sea of Galilee killed sev- eral thousand and destroyed much of the city of Safed. Earthquakes are notoriously impossible to predict. Israel has about a dozen mild quakes a year and a moderate one every 21 years. Scientists have been able to set up patterns of frequency and have achieved a fair degree of accurate forewarning. The most recent shocks of any conse- quence took place within the past year and a half. In November 1995, one occurred offEilat, mea- suring 6.2 on the Richter scale; and three months later Eilat was hit again with 5.4 on the Richter scale. This one was felt, more moderately, as far north as Ne- tanya. Seven years ago, the country's acknowledged experts warned that all indications pointed to a large scale quake within the corn- ing 50 years. It could be next month or next year but certain- ly within the half century, they warned.
