urvivors of the Holocaust, a
moving 70-minute docu-
mentary which has its roots
in the success of Steven
Spielberg's Schindler's List,
has been nominated for three
Emmy awards, including the
newly established President's
award.
The documentary combines ,_
historic footage of the 1930s -- 2 -'
and '40s with personal testi- 5
monies of survivors, a behind- 1
the-scenes tour conducted by tc:;),
Ben Kingsley of the Shoah Vi- T L ,
sual History Foundation in Los E
Angeles, and an interview with
Spielberg.
The foundation's founding di- §
rectors, June Beallor and James Pc,
Moll, were also the producers of
the documentary, in association
with Turner Original Produc-
tions.
The President's award, es-
tablished by the Academy of
Television Arts & Sciences, hon-
ors the program which best ex-
plores social, educational or
medical issues, as well as en-
courages changes that assist so-
ciety in becoming familiar with
those issues. The award will be
presented for the first time at
the 48th Annual Prime Time
Emmy Awards ceremony on
Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Pasade-
na Civic Auditorium.
In addition, Survivors of
the Holocaust received nomina-
tions in the categories of Out-

The goal of the Shoah Visual
History Foundation, established
by Spielberg two years ago, is to
create a permanent videotape li-
brary of survivor testimonies.
The rationale for embarking
on the project, Spielberg ex-
plained at the time, was the
steady stream of survivors who
approached him during and fol-
lowing the filming of Schindler's

List.

"[Survivors] came up to me
and said, 'Let me tell you my sto-

fresh fish •quality meats

WE ARE NOW TAKING
YOUR ORDERS FOR

ry,' " Spielberg noted. "But
what they were really say-
ing was, 'Let me tell a cam-
era; let me tell my story to
history.' "
So far, the foundation has
videotaped interviews with
19,000 survivors.
"It's very much a race
against time," said Spiel-
berg. "The majority of the
Holocaust survivors are in their
70s and 80s, and the window for
capturing their testimony is clos-
ing fast."
Spielberg expects to raise the
number of testimonies to 50,000
by the end of 1997:

e The 48th Annual Prime

Time Emmy Awards will air
on Sunday, Sept. 8. Survivors
are requested to contact the
foundation by phoning (800)

Shoah Visual History Foun-
dation, P.O. Box 3168, Los
