tend to implement their desire
to help Israel, how they view the
American role in the peace ne-
gotiations and how they might
try to balance Israel's interests
against other important Ameri-
can diplomatic concerns.
And then we react with cries
of betrayal when our leaders go
back on vague, pandering
promises that were meant only
/---) as political giveaways.
Part of the success of the pro-
Israel community in recent
decades has been its political so-
phistication. Jewish groups have
been better than most in work-
ing with politicians from all
points on the political spectrum,
in finding areas of commonality
based on real issues.
But in recent years, we've be-
come lazy. We've mistaken re-
assurance for support, pandering
for genuine understanding.
We've grown to like the trans-
parent kowtowing, the conde-
scending praise for our
community and for Israel.
And when we do this, we ul-
timately imperil the structure
of Jewish power we've created
over the years — a structure
built out of hard-headed prag-
matism, not a wistful quest for
reassurance. ❑
