mistrust between Israel and its
neighbors is imperiling a number
of business opportunities which
had been started during the Ra-
bin/Peres government, this may
be a small price to pay for a sta-
ble peace based on real expecta-
tions. It appears that the business
of business and the business of
government many times have a
different focus. The objective of
business is short term profits,
while the objective of government
is long term survival of the coun-
try, its founding principle and its
peoplehood. We in the United
States need also to separate our
view of Israel and the peace
process, taking into consideration
that the future will only be sta-
ble if the people feel secure in
their daily lives as they travel
within Israel doing the mundane _ I
things that create a normal
lifestyle. This clearly is the job of
government and not the job of the
economic establishment.
Thus, our dilemma remains:
Can we accept their world view
even if it doesn't comport with
ours? It is my hope that we Amer-
icans can, in fact, do exactly that.
The future holds many risks. Let
us give the Netanyahu govern-_
ment a chance to find its way
through the morass we Ameri-
cans refer to as the Middle East
problem. ❑

American Jewish community, I
am not. What I am advocating is
a sense of balance in our per-
spective. We cannot allow our
dream of peace for Israel and its
Arab neighbors to distort our tol-
erance of the Netanyahu gov-
ernment. Certainly we can speak
our minds, but our thoughts
should be balanced with an un-
derstanding of the real underly-
ing issues with which Israel must
grapple. The euphoria we felt
during Israel's push toward peace
must now be replaced with a
longer view of the process.
We need only remind ourselves
of the carnage which occurred in
Bosnia these past few years to
gain a level of confidence in the
actions being exhibited by the
newly elected government. In
Bosnia, neighbors slaughtered
neighbors with whom they had
lived in peace for generations
once the political veneer had been
stripped from long-smoldering re-
ligious hatreds. Why do we be-
lieve this could not occur in the
Middle East with Israel being the
focus?
Religious fundamentalism
does not seem to be waning; on
the contrary, it seems to be rein-
serting itself into all aspects of
life throughout the Middle East.
Can we here in America prejudge
the possible outcome of the com-
plex dynamic? I think not.
_ Many. will disagree with what
I have written here. I respect
those who believe that Israel
would proceed full steam ahead
with the peace process; but the
cautions I express here reflect
that a slowing of the peace
process may, in the long run, re-'
ally serve Israel and world Jew-
ry very well.
While we are beginning to see
articles in the Wall Street Jour-
nal indicating that the growing
