FROM ANYWHERE ELSE BUT HARPER?

You can take a harbor cruise
and among the fascinating sights
it is likely you will see several
American ships. U.S. sailors often
stroll the streets of Haifa in the
evening. One sailor told me re-
cently that he and his buddies like
to visit the city because they are
so warmly welcomed.
Fine hotels abound in the San
Francisco-like city. Most of the
five-star hotels are on top of
Mount Cannel. There are also
many fine restaurants and shops
on the crest of the tall mountain.

In addition, there are man
to visit in the Hadar section; this
commercial part of the city is
about half way up the mountain.
Hadar is a very busy colorful part
of town. You'll find lots of reason-
ably priced shops and places to
eat.
The bottom layer of Haifa's
triple-decker sandwich topogra-
phy is the bay area. Ahighlight is
the spacious boardwalk. On pleas-
ant evenings, you will see many
Israelis strolling, biking or roller
skating along this lovely seaside
promenade. Many of the restau-
rants in the area offer a wide va-
riety of fresh fish dishes.
There is no mega mall in Haifa,
but there are many very large
American-style shopping malls.
One of them has an indoor ice
skating rink. You can rent skates
and cool off for a couple of hours.
The rink is quite small by our
standards, but it is a fun experi-
ence.
Haifa prides itself on being the
Silicon Valley or high-tech center
of the country. Major Israeli com-
panies in the city develop tech-
nologies and manufacture
products to sell internationally to
such markets as medical diag-
nostics, computer systems and
fiber optics. Israeli companies such
as Elscint, Elbit and Fibronics
have large complexes headquar-
tered in Haifa.
Two major learning centers in
this city of about 250,000 people
are the Technion and Haifa Uni-
versity. The Technion specializes
in engineering, architecture, com-
puter science and math-related
subjects.
Haifa University is a liberal
arts schooL You can tour it on your
own. Be sure to visit the Hecht Ar-
chaelogical Museum in the Uni-
versity's towering building.
Other places to visit in Haifa
are the Bahai Temple with its
dome of 12,000 fish-scale tiles,
each glazed with gold leaf; the
Clandestine Immigration and
Naval Museum; the Carmel Na-
tional Park, a nature preserve that
covers 4,000 acres (I suggest you
drive in and take short hikes).
Haifa is the only city in Israel
where there is Shabbat bus ser-
vice. The city is also unusual in
that it has had a school of Reform
ideology for about 50 years. The
Leo Baeck School serves some
1000 pupils. ❑
