ASK ABOUT HMI-IFS ETP. Newport's early founders — and also the inspiration for Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "The Jewish Cemetery at New- port." Evocative of the past in a dif- ferent way was our hotel, the Viking. We chose it because it is just steps away from the syna- gogue and cemetery, and it is Jewish owned. It is also a Newport landmark, the "grand dame" of Newport ho- tels, built by 100 of Newport's wealthy citizens in the 1920s to accommodate their guests who came for the town's busy summer social season. Listed on the National Regis- ter of Historic Places, the Viking Hotel has hosted its share of fa- mous guests, including President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy, who were married not far from the ho- tel in a Newport mansion. From the hotel, it was an easy walk downhill to Newport's var- ied attractions. At the harbor, we took a cruise on the bay — pic- ture postcard lovely in the sun- shine — seeing yachts all along the route. Later we went on a narrated bus tour which took us along Ocean Drive, which is lined with palatial mansions. The city is also ideal for walk- ing, and we enjoyed several strolls through the downtown area with its authentic colonial flavor. Before we left Newport, we re- turned once more to the syna- gogue to take a few photos and linger for one more last look. Again visitors were waiting out- side for the next tour to begin. Undoubtedly it would be one highlight of their trip to Newport, just as it was for us: a chance to see a beautiful and historic sanc- tuary and to learn the eventful history of the nation's only sur- viving colonial-era synagogue. ❑ Israel's Haifa: The Livable City HMHF Colorado NEWPORT page 123 An American Travel Company Haifa is one of the special cities of Israel. But many tourists and tours do not go there. Why should you visit this ma- jestic mountain city by the Mediterranean? Here are some reasons. Wide, beautiful, sandy beach- es stretch for miles along the blue sea. Swimming is a favorite sport. Fishing is big in Haifa and so are the deep-sea fish. During the day and especially on weekends, the beaches and wa- ter are busy. At night, you want to find a good spot high above the sea on Mount Carmel to see the multitude of flickering lights that illuminate the huge harbor and the anchored ships.
