It Is easily passed from per- son to person and can last for weeks. One percent of children un- der age 1 who contract the ill- ness either die or suffer permanent brain injury. Polio, which is largely erad- icated in the Western world due to the vaccine, can leave victims unable to breathe with- out the aid of a machine. Measles causes high fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes and a rash for up to two weeks. Most serious complications include in- fection of the brain, hearing low>, mental retardation and death. Mumps lasts for several days and is marked by fever, headache, swollen and painful glands under the jaw, a mild swelling of the coverings of the brain and spinal cord and hear- ing loss. Rubella is perhaps most se- rious for pregnant women and their unborn children. Symp- toms of rubella include fever, swollen glands, a rash lasting for three days and soreness of the joints; the effects on the fe- tus are greater and include heart disease, blindness, deaf- ness or learning problems. Haemophilus Influenzae Type B (BIB) can be spread through coughing or sneezing or close contact. Those afflicted with it can suffer from swelling of brain that can affect sight, hearing or speech, or lead to mental retardation. Hepatitis B affects the liv- er, potentially leading to liver failure, scarring of the liver, liv- er cancer or death. Tetanus can be transmitted through a cut or wound to the body. Also called lock j aw, it ren- ders a person unable to open his mouth or swallow, in addition to causing muscle spasms. It kills 30 percent of those who contract it. Diphtheria can render a person unable to breathe or move. Chickenpox, one of the most common of childhood ill- nesses, is marked by a rash of blisters that spreads across the body in about three to four days. 0 As obstetricians and gynecologists, we provide a full range of routine and specialized services: I preconception counseling and infertility treatment I comprehensive prenatal and obstetrical care I Pap smears, breast exams, cancer screenings treatment for PMS, endometriosis and menopause West Oakland Evening appointments are available.
