into my current mess, if I really could return to yesterday, then I am on the right path to improv- ing my lot. Looking backward also means turning to the history of a people and community. Ours is not the first generation to face physical suffering, destruction, immoral- ity and other ills of society. Our holy books and history books pro- vide us with guidance. Closing my eyes and wishing it were tomorrow will not cause my problems to disappear. Gain- ing insight from the experiences of the past might indeed enable me to face my crises of today with a renewed sense of optimism. We know the value of "looking backward" because it is ingrained in our tradition. Our emphasis on memory — of both the glorious and the trag- ic — is a central Jewish value. Teshuvah, the process of change which we hope to accom- plish at this time of the year, re- volves around the power of the past. Teshuvah means return. We are called upon to consider what have been our deeds and mis- deeds in the recent past, and then to find our way back to a way of life which we know to be better for us from both personal and communal experience. Some peo- ple are forever searching for a better way of life, believing that where they come from has been less than satisfactory. As members of the Jewish peo- ple, we are blessed with the knowledge that meaningful life is available to us and all we need to do is reach back and reclaim it. ❑ Your Family Should Meet Our Family We extend a most personal invitation to join us at Congregation Shaarey Zedek where you and your dear ones are most dear to us.
