WERE FIGHTING FOR YOUR LIFE

n an unusual twist, a local
Jewish community member
has- stepped into the
Delaware shoes of a
Delawarean who has come to
Detroit. .
Jeff Metz, 36, who grew up in
Huntington Woods, has been
hired as the executive director
of the Jewish Community Cen-
ter in Wilmington, Del. David
Sorkin left that position last
spring to become the executive
director at the Jewish Commu-
nity Center of Metropolitan De-
troit. Mr. Sorkin was the
executive director in Wilming-
ton for eight years.
Mr. Metz goes to his new po-
sition after six years as assistant
to the executive director at the
JCC in Milwaukee, Wis. The
Wilmington JCC serves a popu-
lation of about 15,000, half the
size of that in Milwaukee.
Mr. Metz, who started his
new job Aug. 13, described
Wilmington as a "lovely city,"
with the JCC being the "focal
point for the Jewish communi-
ty. It's very active, very wel-
coming." Mr. Metz moved to
Wilmington this month with his
wife, Cindi, and children,
Daniel, 5, and Elana, 3.

Mr. Sorkin said Wilmington
is an "exciting, vibrant commu-
nity to work in." In a previous
interview, he said the challenge
there would be reaching out to
Delaware's Jewish population.
The JCC in Wilmington serves
the entire state.
In Detroit, Mr. Metz was as-
sistant director of the Fresh Air
Society and head of Camp
Tamarack-Brighton. As a
youngster, he attended the camp
and was also active in the B'nai
Brith Youth Organization.
His experiences in Detroit, he
said, prepared him for Wilm-
ington. 'When I grew up in De-
troit, there was true
commitment to Jewish life, not
only with the Jewish Commu-
nity Center, but in all organiza-
tions — Jewish Family Service,
Jewish Vocational Service.
There is a tremendous effort for
Jewish families to be a part of
Jewish life and community.
Growing up in that life and see-
ing the value of it and how it
worked prepared me for how
things work in other cities.
"Now my undivided attention
is going to be involved in run-
ning the center." ❑
