f it's true that a healthy mind re-

quires its own kind of regular
workout, then Wayne State Uni-
versity's (WSU) Norma Gold-
man may be the intellectual
aerobics instructor you need to flex
those mental muscles.
Goldman is an expert in ancient
Roman life, having published, lec-
tured (in WSU's Greek and Latin
department for some 40 years) and
even participated in excavations
on the subject. Her expertise is so
renowned, the British Broadcast-
ing Company recently used her
services as a technical consultant
for the upcoming documentary Se-

crets of Lost Empires.

In addition to scholarly pur-
suits, she also acts as adviser for
the Jewish Community Center's
Senior Writers Group, which an-
nually publishes its Writers Jour-
nal, and participates in the JCC's
yearly book fair.
Goldman is now involved with
Wayne State's College of Lifelong
Learning, where she is piloting a
course titled "Hollywood and the
Classics," set to begin on Sept. 9
at WSU's Farmington Hills cam-
pus. The 15-week course will in-
troduce mythological and
historical figures and spotlight one
film per week, including such films
as Ben Hur, Last Days of Pompeii,

Caesar and Cleopatra, Masada
and, as an added treat, A Funny
Thing Happened on the Way to the
Forum.

Each meeting will begin with a
half-hour introductory lecture on
the particular feature and, after
the movie, the class will be en-
couraged to participate in a dis-
cussion on the many aspects of life
and culture displayed in that
evening's film.
What relevance do events that
occurred so long ago hold for to-
day's society?

These stories deal with issues
like war, politics, power and the
relationships between men and
women — the same issues that
our society deals with today," says
Goldman. "By comparing these
ancient times with the present,
we can see how human nature
has evolved over the years."
As a complement to her factu-
al expertise in this course, Gold-
man will be teamed with
award-winning author and folk- ,-
lorist Richard Raspa, a fellow fac-
ulty member at Wayne State.
Raspa will provide further insight
by explaining the traditions of
these cultures and how they are
still influential after so many
years. Because the medium of
film brings to life some classic lit-
erary works that are too intimi-
dating for most readers, Raspa
believes the course to be an ideal
vehicle for individuals who oth-
erwise might not be exposed to
these fascinating ancient worlds.
In other words, if you have
been intimidated by names like
Sophocles or Homer, you should
feel a whole lot more comfortable
with Charlton Heston, Kirk Dou-
glas and Zero Mostel. ❑
