who show a high level of "ag-
gressive responding" hostility
may have a higher risk of devel-
oping heart disease than their
calmer counterparts.
Aggressive responders have a
tough, cold-hearted view of the
world. They agree with state-
ments like "I don't blame anyone
for grabbing everything he can
in this world" and "I don't try to
cover up my poor opinion or pity
of another person."
"Aggressive responding may
be a behavioral marker that
could provide early identification
of people who are at risk of heart
disease, but who don't yet have
damage to the heart," says
Tilmer Engebretson, assistant
professor of psychiatry at OSU.
OSU researchers also have
found that breast cancer patients
who participated in an 18-week
intervention program had better
immune function than other pa-
tients.
The program included train-
ing in relaxation, stress reduc-
tion and coping strategies, such

Researchers found that people

consumers and health-care pro-
fessionals correlate product
names with specific active in-
gredients of over-the-counter
medications."
This can confuse both con-
sumers and doctors.
"For example, a specific brand
name has been associated with
a short-acting antihistamine. The
manufacturer recently released
a new product with a modifica-
tion of the same brand name, but
that product contains a long-act-
ing antihistamine with signifi-
cantly different dosing
requirements," Engle notes.
There's no saying when — or
if — standardized labeling will
be instituted for over-the-counter
drugs. But consumers can pro-
tect themselves by carefully read-
ing labels (checking out the
dosage, possible side effects and
symptoms the drug treats) even
for medications with familiar
names and packaging. When in
doubt, consult a doctor or phar-
macist.
