ight about now, Bob Dole
should be pleading with
Stephen Friedman for help.
The Republican presi-
dential nominee finally has a mes-
sage, but delivering it might be
his Achilles' heel.
"He needs to have a little more
variety in his pace and pitch; he
needs to have a warmer feel. He
comes across as a typical politi-
cian — he's coming across as eva-
sive, but he's emphasizing the
evasiveness. He should be transi-
tioning from the question he
doesn't want to answer to the
point he wants to make. He's not
shaping the message right," says
Mr. Friedman, author of the re-
cently published 100 Practical
Tips for Improving Your Presen-
tation.
Mr. Friedman, 50, is an expert
in public presentations. His ad-
vice has been sought by teachers,
CEOs, attorneys and marketing
executives, but not politicians —
yet.
As president of Brightlines Cre-
ative, established as CoVideo nine
years ago by the Franco Public Re-
lations Group, Mr. Friedman han-
dles video production, media
training, script writing, and more
recently, World Wide Web site de-
sign. Since its inception, the com-
pany has served 150 different
corporations, which send their ern-
ployees for media and presenta-
tion training seminars. IBM is its
biggest client.
100 Practical Tips for Improv-
ing Your Presentation was a nat-
ural outgrowth of Mr. Friedman's
personal and professional paths,
which included stints at CBS as
a news researcher and as a TV
news reporter in Columbus, Ohio.
