Also, Mr. Sher wants Jewish
Republicans to pressure the par-
ty to take anti-Buchanan stands,
something which I heartily en-
dorse; but why doesn't he remind
the 85 percent of the Jewish vot-
ers who vote Democratic to pres-
sure the Democrats to repudiate
the Farrakhan elements so es-
sential to the black votes which
Democrats badly want to culti-
vate and appease? I cannot for-
get the mealy-mouthed tepid
comments Clinton made at the
time of the Million Man March.
Second item: I have an answer
to Alan Hitsky's question, "When
has a terrorist action achieved
anything more than the deaths of
innocent people?" The answer is
in Israel. It was the terrorism and
the intifada alone which brought
Israel to negotiations with the very
terrorists who killed its innocent
civilians. And in the frantic desire
for peace and quiet at all costs,
some were willing to risk their
very existence by placing it in the
hands of these same terrorists. If
I were a terrorist, I would count
this as a great victory.

Dialogue
Does Exist

Your synopsis on Joseph Aaron's
article (Opinion, "Joe Judaism
Serves Personal Needs", Aug. 16)
says, "There is no official [na-
tional] dialogue group among Re-
form, Conservative and Orthodox
Jews." In the Detroit area, such
a dialogue exists.
It is the Unity Committee of
the Jewish Community Council.
Established by past JCC chair-
person Jeannie Weiner and now
chaired by Michael Traison, it has
been in existence for more than
three years. Its membership com-
bines delegates not only from the
Reform, Conservative and Or-
thodox Jewish communities, but
also Reconstructionist and Hu-
manistic Jews.
As a representative of the Re-
form community, I have been
privileged to join with my fellow
committee members in planning \
the second annual Unity. Shab-
bat — an area-wide undertaking
initiated last year under joint
sponsorship with The Jewish
News — to take place during the
weekend of Oct. 25-26.
The Unity Committee has
been successful in formulating
understanding and cooperation
in matters that concern us as re-
ligious Jews, yet always respect-
ing each others' differences.
If, as Mr. Aaron seems to indi-
cate, this is a unique institution,
Detroit-area Jews of all persua-
sions can be justifiably proud to
add a first to Jewish tradition.
