tors said she was such a good
candidate," Ms. Wagenheim
said.
The harvesting complete, Ms.
Vinton was waiting to go ahead
with the chemotherapy treat-
ment to kill the bone marrow
when she was informed by her
insurance company that it would
not pay for the rest of the treat-
ment. Attorneys for the family
are attempting to force the in-
surance company to pay for the
procedure.
But that takes time, and time
is not what Ms. Vinton has in
great quantity. For the trans-
plant to be successful, it must
take place soon, Ms. Wagenheim
said.
"This procedure was like
something wonderful was hand-
ed to us. It was a ray of hope,"
she said. "And then it was
taken away."

"The scary thing about this
whole thing is that time is of the
essence," she said.
Ms. Wagenheim and her fam-
ily have established a fund to
help defray costs of the proce-
dure, which Ms. Vinton cannot
afford on her own. Donations
from friends and fund-raisers in
Montana have netted a small
amount toward the goal.
Locally, Jewish Family Ser-
vice has donated $2,000 from an
emergency fund designated for
just such cases. Ms. Wagenheim
also is soliciting public dona-
tions, all in an attempt to pro-
vide her sister a chance to watch
her children grow up.
"I feel really helpless," Ms.
Wagenheim said. "I just don't
know what else to do for her." ❑
