Four Documents
Found At Hazor
The discovery of four ancient doc-
uments during excavations at
the Hazor National Park
strengthens the belief that ar-
chaeologists are nearing the dis-
covery of at least one of the
archives of the Canaanite kings
of Hazor.
The excavations, the Selz
Foundation Hazor Excavations
in Memory of Yigael Yadin, are
a joint project of the Hebrew Uni-
versity of Jerusalem and Corn-
plutense of Madrid.
Amnon Ben-Tor, Yigael Yadin
Professor of Archaeology at the
Hebrew University's Institute of
Archaeology and director of the
Hazor excavations, said appar-
ently two archives were at Ha-
zor and that he is hopeful there
will be further revelations from
the archives in coming excava-
tion seasons.
The latest discoveries double
the number of documents thus
far uncovered at the site, locat-
ed north of the Sea of Galilee
near Rosh Pina. The first docu-
ment was found by the late Pro-
fessor Yigael Yadin in the 1950s,
the second by a visitor to the ar-
chaeological mound in the 1960s,
and two more in earlier seasons
of the current sites of excavations
led by Professor Ben-Tor.
Archaeologists
apparently are
nearing archives of
a Canaanite king.
The four documents just found
were uncovered in the ruins of
the Canaanite royal palace,
where excavation work has been
taking place over the past few
seasons.
Professor Ben-Tor said the
texts can be divided into two pe-
riods — the middle bronze (2000
to 1600 B.C.E.) and the late
bronze (1600-1200 B.C.E). They
are written in a local dialect of
the Akkadian language. The doc-
uments, on clay tablets, are be-
ing deciphered by Professor
Aaron Shaffer and Dr. Wayne
Horowitz of the Department of
Assyriology at the Hebrew Uni-
versity. In preliminary readings,
scholars found that the first doc-
ument deals with the dispatch of
people or goods to three places,
the most noteworthy of which is
Hazor. The second document
mentions a dispute, whose na-
ture is still unclear, between
three people. The third is a study
text of multiplication tables, and
the fourth deals with dispatch of
goods from Hazor.
