ingham district, notes that "peo-
ple choose private schools often
because of strong familial bonds,
or the desire for same-sex
schools, or the size of a school.
Most are choosing parochial
schools because of values."
Scott Cranus, administrative
director of Hillel Day School, has
seen an increase in inquiries
over the past few years. One fac-
tor, he says, is most parents, like
the Garons, choose Hillel for the
Jewish education; an added
bonus is the Jewish values con-
tained in the curriculum.
Other major reasons include
"the real and or perceived de-
cline in public school education;
a desire for stronger Jewish ed-
ucation; and a result of our own
success in building a reputation
as a quality institution."
For Orthodox families, the de-
cision is less of a debate, said
Rabbi Carmi Gross, principal of
Akiva Hebrew Day School.
"To the parents who choose
Akiva, Judaic studies are very
important," he said. "Parents
are willing to put their children
through a double curriculum so
that their children learn about
their heritage."
But that is not to say that sec-
ular education is not important
to these parents.
"They also see Akiva as a pri-
vate school, in the sense that, 'I
am paying so much tuition, I ex-
pect smaller classes, personal-
ized attention, and a better
curriculum,' " Rabbi Gross said.
Dr. Tom and Lisa Pullman of
Franklin are choosing to enroll
/— their three children — Michael,
12, Adam, 9, and Ali, 6 -- in De-
troit Country Day School this
fall because of what they feel is
the aftermath to consolidation
in the Birmingham schools.
Their elementary school, Mead-
ow Lake, was joined with Wal-
nut Lake to form a large
elementary at West Maple, and
middle schoolers now attend
Berkshire Middle School. The
personalized feel they and their
children were used to in a neigh-
borhood school has been lost.
"In both schools, we were
dealing
with experimental pro-
/—
grams, and the kids were the
ones having to deal with it," says
Ms. Pullman. "We were very big
supporters of public schools, and
we are very torn about leaving
the neighborhood. But our kids
are being offered a great oppor-
tunity at Country Day."
Making the choice is not
easy. ❑
