n any day in Jerusalem,
there are many activities
to take advantage of.
Three exciting sites to vis-
it are the Israel Museum, Bible
Lands Museum and the Tower
of David Museum.
The Israel Museum is the
largest and most elaborate of the
three sites. Opened in 1965, this
institution is renowned for its
biblical and archaeological col-
lections. Close to 1 million visi-
tors a year tour the museum.
While the emphasis is on the
history and art of Israel, the mu-
seum also presents Islamic,
Western European, Oceanic,
African, Asian, North American
Indian and Pre-Columbian art.
There are also special exhibitions
of contemporary art, photogra-
phy, architecture and design.
In addition to the museum it-
self, a combination ticket gets you
into the Shrine of the Book. The
shrine houses one of Israel's
greatest national treasures: the
world-famous Dead Sea Scrolls.
Dramatically displayed, the
actual scrolls are on view and ex-
plained in English. There also is
an explanation of the story of
how and where the scrolls were
found.
A third segment of the Israel
Museum is the Billy Rose Sculp-
ture Garden with over 150 ma-
jor sculptures.
Across the road from the Israel
Museum is the relatively new
(1992) Bible Lands Museum.
Much smaller than its nearby
cousin, this unusual institution

has as its aim "to illuminate the
life and times of the Bible, set-
ting the Bible in its ancient en-
vironment."
The core of the collection was
donated by Dr. Elie Borowsky,
an antiques collector. The ele-
gant, open-designed museum has
over 3,000 artifacts dating from
6,000 B.C.E. to 600 C.E.
Among many rare and pre-
cious items on display in the 20
galleries are East Mediterranean
mosaics, Phonecian ivory inlay,
painted coffins from Egypt,
Sumerian seals and pieces from
Syria and Persia.
Biblical quotes often sit above
items from various internation-
al cultures. The museum feels
that these cultures all had an im-
portant influence upon the de-
velopment of Israeli culture.
There is a tour in English of the
museum almost every day at 10
a.m.
The third site is the Tower of
David Museum of History, lo-
cated just inside the wall of the
Old City. You will see the mag-
nificent displays of ancient ar-
chaeological finds combined with
exhibits using the most advanced
computer and audio-visual tech-
nology.
The museum offers three
tours. One is the Exhibit Tour
that follows the history of
Jerusalem from the Canaanite
period to the present. This guid-
ed tour, available in English,
takes about two hours.
The Observation Sites Tour re-
quires you to climb up to the
