800 Jews donate to church arson fund.

ewish individuals in
metropolitan Detroit and
Ann Arbor have con-
tributed 30 percent of the
donations collected here to help
black church congregations that
were victims of arson.
More than $80,000 has been
collected by Project Restoration
since June 14, including $14,000
sent through the Jewish Com-
munity Council of Metropolit
an Detroit and $9,400 sent
through the Jewish Federation
of Washtenaw County.
Project Restoration will help
some of the 70 black churches
across the country that have
been struck by suspicious fires
in the last two years. The pro-
ject was started by the Rev.
Wendell Anthony, president of
the Detroit Chapter of the
National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People,
and the Rev. Edgar Vann, pres-
ident of Detroit's Council of Bap-
tist Pastors.
The Rev. Anthony was pleased
that Detroiters and several reli-
gious denominations — "includ-
ing those outside the Christian
faith" — had stepped up to help.
Some $30,000 has already been
sent to two churches in North and
South Carolina. Project Restora-
tion is working with the Center
for Democratic Renewal to find
burned-out congregations in Mis-
sissippi, Alabama or Tennessee
with no or low insurance coverage
to receive the additional $50,000.
Rabbi Marla Feldman of the
Jewish Community Council said
337 individuals have made
contributions to the fund via
Council, with nearly $10,000 of
the total coming from members
of Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
Residents of Federation Apart-
ments had a special campaign
to collect for the fund.

The Jewish Federation of
Washtenaw County received
500 contributions in three weeks
after it sent a July letter to Ann
Arbor's 6,000 Jewish residents.
"I think it cast a broader net for
a lot of people, beyond Israel and
Jewish life," said Washtenaw
Federation president Evie
Lichter.
"For the socially minded in
the community — those that
look at the broader spectrum —
it resonated with them," Ms.
Lichter said. ❑
