Richard H. Lobenthal, retiring
director of the Michigan Region-
al Office of the Anti-Defamation
League, will be honored at a gals
reception, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct.
29. He will receive the ADL
Champion of Liberty Award at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
Mr. Lobenthal, director of the
ADL Michigan office for more
than three decades, has been an
ardent advocate for the Jewish
community, speaking out against
anti-Semitism, hate crimes, and
all manner of discrimination. Mr.
Lobenthal is being honored for
his unparallel 32 years of service
to the Jewish community, met-
ropolitan Detroit area and the
state of Michigan.

Conversion
Course Set

The Rabbi Max Weine Institute
for Judaism will begin its fall se-
mester on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
The class,which meets weekly
from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Congre-
gation Beth Shalom, is sponsored
by the Conservative rabbis of
Metropolitan Detroit. The insti-
tute provides four months of
study on the basics of Conserva-
tive Judaism.
The curriculum includes study
of Jewish history, holidays, the
philosophy of Conservative Ju-
daism as well as prayer and pro-
vides opportunities to experience
and understand sacred moments
in the calendar. Basic Hebrew is
included along with a Shabbat
dinner.
Rabbi David A. Nelson teach-
es the course assisted by Alicia
Nelson. Registration is required
and can be arranged by speaking
wit any of the Conservative rab-
bis in the community. For infor-
