The kibbutz movement in Israel c\ /
has a long, proud history.
First, a little background. The
basic concept of the kibbutzim can
be summed up in their original
slogan: "Whoever works the land
is its master."
The kibbutz movement has
made a major contribution to the
safety and development of Israel.
Many evolutionary changes in the
kibbutzim have taken place over
the years. Small industrial plants
have sprouted up on the land.
Many children now live full time
with their parents. A number of
younger people are moving to the
cities.
One way to gain the kibbutz ex-
perience would be to volunteer to
work. However, the work is phys-
ically strenuous; and this program
is not for everyone.
The easier way to learn of kib-
butzim is to skip the King David
or the Sheraton and spend your va-
cation at one of the kibbutz hotels
and holiday villages that dot the c-
---\
Israeli landscape. There are over
2,200 rooms available on kibbutz-
im throughout the country. This is
Israel's largest resort network.
All the hotels are
either three or four
stars.
You will find hotels near the
Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee, the
Mediterranean, Jerusalem and
the desert areas in the south.
Don't expect luxurious accom-
modations, but do expect clean
rooms at low prices. Some sites of-
fer beautiful swimming pools;
many kibbutzim have archaeolo-
gy or art museums. You can see
elaborate sculpture gardens, go
horseback riding or play tennis.
The children will enjoy the water
parks and exotic animal farms.
Of course, you can tour the kib-
butz. You will see the living quar-
ters, the communal dining room,
the children's house, etc.
The hotels are either apart-
ments, bungalows or single-mul-
tiple story structures. Five holiday
villages are at the seashore or in
the country and are popular with
families. Three of the hotels are re-
ligiously observant.
All the hotels are graded either
three or four stars, and the food is
kosher, vegetarian or dietetic.
Double rooms range in price
from $40 a night for low season to
over $100 during the high season.
