HERMELIN page 3

"He is the confidante of polit-
ical leaders, heads of state and
yet at the same time he is a man
of the people who has never lost
his common touch," Rabbi Groner
said.
"David Hermelin is one of the
outstanding Jewish leaders of our
generation. His leadership is built
on his determination, his vision
and his extraordinary energy,"
he said. "He has a remarkable
quality of creating a world of en-
chantment. He transforms a
meeting into a celebration; he
makes a campaign an adven-
ture."
Mr. Hermelin has held nu-
merous positions in communal
work over the years. Currently,
he is a member of Federation's
board of governors and executive
committee, president of the
World ORT Union, vice chairman
and member of the executive
committee of the United Jewish
Appeal and is a director at large
for the United Synagogue for
Conservative Judaism.
"David is a renaissance man,"
said Robert Aronson, Federa-
tion's executive vice president.
"Everything he does, he does with
style and class, but he also does
it with a deep sense of commit-
ment to the Jewish community
as well as the welfare of the en-
tire community."
Mr. Aronson noted that Mr.
Hermelin is very involved in the
fund-raising end of community
work and at times calls on the
same people for donations. While
these activities could be less than
endearing to some, Mr.Hermelin
is able to turn these kinds of
meetings into an anticipated
event.
"Everybody is always excited
to see him," Mr. Aronson said.
Aside from Jewish communal
work, Mr. Hermelin is chairman
of the oversight committee for the
Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute (formerly the Michigan

Cancer Foundation), vice presi-
dent of the Pistons-Palace Foun-
dation, and a member of the
advisory council and national co-
chair of the major gifts commit-
tee for the University of
Michigan.
He is affiliated with Children's
Hospital of Michigan, Commu-
nity Foundation for Southeast-
ern Michigan, Greater Detroit
Interfaith Round Table, Detroit
Symphony Orchestra Hall, Mey-
er L. Prentis Comprehensive
Cancer Center, Michigan Opera
Theater and the Detroit Institute
of Arts.
He also has leadership roles in
the American Jewish Joint Dis-
tribution Committee, Hebrew
Immigrant Aid Society, Hebrew

University, Weizmann Institute,
Bar-Ilan University, Israel Ten-
nis Centers Association and Op-
eration Independence.
He is the former president of
the American ORT Federation
and the Jewish Home for Aged.
Mr. Hermelin credited his fam-
ily and members of the commu-
nity for supporting his activism.
"If you are driven by the desire
to be out there for the commu-
nity, the people who are beside
you and those who have gone be-
fore you in their quest to make
the community great are such a
stimulant," he said.
Doreen Hermelin said the fam-
ily has been proud of her hus-
band's activism over the years.
"If you know him at all, you know
that he is deserving of the
award," she said. 'We are all very
proud of him." O
