In the past, Mr. Yekutieli's two
children have been under police
protection due to haredi threats,
and he was sitting in a car when
a haredi threw a rock through
the windshield. But the violence
has definitely gone up a few
notches recently, he said.

not see an escalation of haredi vi-
olence. "While there is a danger
that some individual lunatic
might do something ghastly,
there is no history at all of any
kind of organized, armed haredi
underground or militias," said
Mr. Landau, who lives in
Jerusalem.
Yigal Amir, he noted, came
from a radical right-wing Ortho-
dox movement, led by extrem-
ist West Bank settlers, that had
a history of murderous violence.
"Any attempt to blur the dis-
tinctions between Yigal Amir and
what the haredim are doing is
part of the political battle being
waged by the forces lined up
against the haredim," he said.
While calling the threats "ap-
palling," Mr. Landau said they
were not a prelude to assassina-
tion, but rather a case of yeshiva
boys "aping" what they think of
as activism. As for the attacks on
women Education Ministry em-
ployees, Mr. Landau said they
were nothing new: During every
summer holiday break, yeshiva
boys with time on their hands at-
tack the secular villain of the sea-
son.
"One summer it's archeolo-
gists," Mr. Landau said, "the
next summer it's doctors who
perform [autopsies], the next
year it's women who dress 'im-
modestly.' "

"The haredim are drunk with
powei," said Mr. Yekutieli. "It
began after they crowned Ehud
Olmert as the city's mayor [by
voting for him en masse in
1993], and then it got even
worse after they crowned Bibi
Netanyahu."
The Reform Movement head-
quarters has received as many
as 25 phone threats and faxes a
day since just after the election.
There have been bomb threats
and warnings of assassination —
at times invoking the name of Yi-
gal Amir, said Anat Galili, spoke-
woman for the movement.
Police traced the threats to
eight Jerusalem yeshivas, Galili
said — "in Meah Shearim, Geu-
la, in the Bar-Ilan area, and oth-
er religious and haredi
neighborhoods." She said she
promised police not to reveal the
yeshivas' names so as not to
harm the investigation.
The threats began early in
June after the Reform and Con-
servative movements protested
the new government's plans to

turn back their challenges to Or-
thodox hegemony over Israeli re-
ligious life.
Last month Chief Sephardi
Rabbi Eliahu Bakshi-Doron gave
a sermon in which he allegedly
compared Reform Jews of today
to an Israelite in the Bible whose
killer was blessed and rewarded
by God. Mrs. Galili, however, said
the telephone and fax threats do
not appear to have increased
since the sermon.
For all this, David Landau, au-
