ness and charitable organiza-
tions, who talk about the meth-
ods they use to accomplish their
goals and galvanize their staffs.
The idea is to connect the
group not only with a wider com-
munity in the city of Detroit but
to build on those skills and con-
nections to eventually steer mem-
bers to Jewish communal
involvement.
"For me, this has been a great
education," said Kim Gladstone,
the director of development for
the College of Urban, Labor and
Metropolitan Affairs at Wayne
State University.
Ms. Gladstone, who is in her
mid-30s, has always given ea-
gerly of her time. She currently
serves on a committee at the De-
troit Institute of Arts and on the
boards of several AIDS organi-
zations. But as a relative new-
comer to Detroit, she said, "I
knew nothing about the Jewish
community.

THE FACE THAT LAUNCHED A 1000 SHIPS.
Inspired by his original collection for the Italian Navy, Franchi Menotti's marine
sports watch is the most popular face in Italy since the Mona Lisa. The Franchi
Menotti's marine sports collection combines Swiss efficiency with the best of
Italian design and frankly, has been known to make a lot of waves.

"I don't think you can be a good
leader unless you're aware of the
resources around you."
Many involved in the project
said they were struck by how
quickly the group bonded during
a get-acquainted retreat in Feb-
ruary at the Butzel Conference
Center at Camp Maas in Or-
tonville.
The weekend gathering al-
lowed these leaders-in-training
to compare notes about the Jew-
ish community and to discuss the
government's role in helping to
foster charitable values.
Organizers said the group will
spend the final months of the
nine-month program working on
a community project chosen by
the members. Like the program
itself, this project may not yield
instant, tangible results. The
skills learned in the doing are
what count.
"You're really looking at a
process here," said Beverly
Phillips of the Jewish Commu-
nity Council, which is helping
run the New Leaders Program.
"You're looking at how these
young adults develop and become
a part of the community." CI
